The chair has been a subject for many artists. Among the most famous are Vincent's Chair with His Pipe and Gaugin's Armchair. Until recently I personally was not compelled to follow this route myself. But then I spotted a solitary chair positioned against a very textural wall at Fort Pike, Louisiana and felt I had to paint it!

When I look at this image I have a sense of waiting, as though something has yet to happen. This is entirely appropriate to my visit, as the Fort had been damaged by Hurricane Katrina and was open only by prior appointment. It was a perfect time to be there, to absorb the history, and to contemplate.
Stopped in Time is an 18" x 24" acrylic painting on canvas. To see a larger version, click on "Original Art." (Typed text at lower left does not appear on original art and prints.)
