Land Acknowledgement

I am a long-term visitor to California's San Francisco Peninsula. It is here, in the counties of San Francisco and San Mateo, that I have lived most of my adult life and continue to reside and pursue my art career. I acknowledge that this is the ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone and that it is unceded, wrongfully taken during the Mission period in California's history. The original people of this area not only lost their land but also experienced genocide. I am grateful for the care that the Ramaytush have given to this place in earlier times and am heartened by the current endeavors of their living descendents to be conscientious stewards of it. I feel we have much to learn from the Ramaytush — and from other indigenous groups too — about caring for, and living in proper relationship to, the Earth and its creatures.
