Xtraordinary

Shadows & Silhouettes Series

My paintings remind me that beauty and harmony are always here. They depict what I have seen again and again, in unexpected places and all around, as I wander through urban streets: when the Sun's rays burst through the fog and shine upon exterior balconies and fire escapes. . . it's magic! Exquisite patterns of light and shadow suddenly blossom from the drab surroundings. Clothing drying in the breezes, affixed to ironwork and windows, add surprising bursts of color and design that enliven the buildings and bring warm thoughts of the people living within.

During my contemplation I forget that the city, splendid in so many ways, also can be gritty and cold. World unrest, often tugging at the emotions and adding its own dark layer of anxiety and hopelessness, fades from my mind.

This magic - these special moments in time when the ephemeral joins with the physical - are captured in my artworks, each one unique and real. I am uplifted when I remember, because this is what I know for certain: even when the clouds seem permanently fixed in place, their presence is temporary. The Sun always comes out again, and the world seems renewed and full of hope.
