Hanging Out with the Dragon
Clothing drying outside this window brings up warm memories from my childhood. For many years my family didn't have a dryer, and my mother would hang the wash in our back yard when the weather was nice enough to do so. She would place the wet garments in a basket with wheels, haul it up the concrete stairs from the laundry room in the basement, then roll it over to the lines. First, she took a damp cloth and wiped each line back and forth, from one end to the other, cleaning off the dirt. Then she pulled the first item off the pile and attached it with a couple of clothes pins.
Here, in Chinatown, I marvel at the ingenuity used to hang the wash. Each item seems special, and placed with care. The colors, shapes, and patterns have an artistry all of their own.
